Napa or Sonoma: pick a valley first

Napa and Sonoma sit side by side north of San Francisco, and both counties are inside our service area. Choosing one for the day, or one corner of one, shapes everything else: which wineries pair well, where lunch fits and how much of the day goes to driving.

Wine areas we drive to, and how to plan each one
AreaWhat it's likePlan around
Highway 29, Napa ValleyThe main road up the valley, through Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena and Calistoga, with many well-known wineries along it.Weekend traffic on the highway. Group tastings that sit close together.
Silverado Trail, Napa ValleyRuns parallel to Highway 29 along the east side of the valley, and is often the quieter drive.Cross roads link the two, so one day can use both sides of the valley.
Town of SonomaTasting rooms around the historic Sonoma Plaza, with wineries across the surrounding Sonoma Valley.Several tasting rooms on the plaza are close enough to walk between.
Russian River ValleyCooler, foggier country west of Santa Rosa, reaching toward Healdsburg and the coast, known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. One of the longer drives from the city. Pair it with nearby wineries, not another valley.
Dry Creek ValleyA narrow valley just northwest of Healdsburg, known for Zinfandel.Healdsburg's plaza makes an easy lunch stop between tastings.

Trying both counties in one day

Napa and Sonoma can share a day, but every move between them adds time on the road. If you want a taste of both, start in Carneros, the area that spans the south end of both valleys, then finish in one of them.

Days that start outside the city

Pickups from the East Bay, Marin or the Peninsula are quoted the same way as San Francisco ones. Starting north of the Bay, in Marin or Solano County for example, puts you closer to the vineyards from the first mile.

Tasting appointments

Book the tastings, or plan them with us

Many wineries ask you to reserve tastings ahead, and you make those reservations directly with each winery. Send us the times once you have them, and we'll set the pickup and the drives between them around your appointments.

Haven't booked yet? Tell us the wineries or the area you're curious about, and we'll help you work out a realistic order and spacing before you reserve. Leave more room between appointments than you think you need: the drive from the city and a proper lunch take a real share of the day.

Our wine country day planning guide goes deeper on spacing tastings, fitting in lunch and pacing the day.

On the day

How a chauffeured wine day works

The car and your chauffeur stay with you from the first pickup to the last drop-off, so nobody has to arrange a ride back.

What your quote covers, and what it doesn't

Your quote covers the vehicle and your chauffeur. We quote every trip individually, so you see the price before anything is booked. It depends on the vehicle, the distance or hours, the date and time, and any stops, and it includes gratuity, tolls and parking.

Part of the car service

A private vehicle and a professional chauffeur for the hours you book, pickup and drop-off at the addresses you choose, and the drives between wineries.

Paid separately

Tasting fees, food, lunch and wine purchases are paid directly to the wineries and restaurants. They aren't part of the car service and don't appear in your quote.

Guided tours

A wine day with us is private transportation. Your chauffeur drives and waits between stops, and tour narration isn't part of the service. If you'd like a guided tour rather than transportation, ask when you request a quote and we'll tell you what we can arrange.

Confirming the day

Your trip is reserved only after we confirm the vehicle, time and price with you. Free cancellation at least 24 hours before scheduled pickup. Later cancellations and no-shows are charged the full reservation price. See the cancellation policy for how the 24 hours are counted. Your quote shows how and when payment is due.

Pickups across the Bay, tastings in Napa and Sonoma

Start from San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, Silicon Valley or Marin, or from a flight into SFO, Oakland or San José. Napa and Sonoma are two of the nine counties we cover.

Have your tasting times? Send them over.

We'll plan the day around your appointments and reply with a vehicle and a price.

Leave room for the ride home

A wine day starts with a group and ends with a group plus everything it bought. Bottles and cases take the same space as luggage, so count them like bags when you pick a vehicle.

Passenger and bag numbers are separate maximums. A full car leaves less room for suitcases, so tell us your bag sizes and we'll choose the right vehicle with you.

For four or more people who plan to buy, an SUV or the Luxury Sprinter is the comfortable choice. Our vehicle and luggage guide goes deeper on sizing, and a wine day for colleagues or clients can be arranged as corporate travel.

  • Executive Sedan or Luxury Sedan: up to 2 passengers and 3 bags.
  • Executive SUV or Luxury SUV: up to 5 passengers and 6 bags.
  • Luxury Sprinter: up to 14 passengers and 14 bags.

Three steps

From tasting list to confirmed car

You don't need every detail to start. Send what you have, and we'll fill in the rest together.

  1. Tell us about the trip.

Add your pickup, drop-off, date and time in the planner, then your name, email and phone number. It takes about a minute.

  2. Get your quote.

We reply with availability and a price for a vehicle that fits your group and your luggage.

  3. Confirm, and you're set.

Your trip is booked once you confirm it. If plans change, cancellation is free at least 24 hours before pickup.

Wine tour transportation questions

Who books the wine tastings?

You reserve tastings directly with each winery. Send us the times, or tell us you haven't booked yet and we'll help you plan the order and spacing first.

Are tasting fees included?

No. Your quote covers the vehicle, your chauffeur, gratuity, tolls and parking. Tastings, food and wine purchases are paid separately.

Should we choose Napa or Sonoma?

Pick the one whose wineries interest you most, and stay in one area for the day. Napa's wineries line Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. Sonoma spreads from the town of Sonoma to the Russian River and Dry Creek valleys.

How many wineries can we visit in a day?

Three or four tastings make a full day for most groups, once you allow for the drive and a lunch stop.

Does the chauffeur wait while we taste?

Yes. The car and your chauffeur stay with you for the whole booking and drive you between wineries.

Can we bring wine home in the car?

Yes. Tell us if you plan to buy, so we suggest a vehicle with room for bottles and cases as well as your group.

Can you pick us up outside San Francisco?

Yes. We drive in all nine Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma. Pickups from hotels, homes and all three Bay Area airports can be quoted.

How many hours should we book?

Wine days are booked by the hour, with a 3-hour minimum. Tell us your first tasting time and when you'd like to be home, and we'll suggest the hours to book.

Planning a wine day?

Send your group size and tasting times. We'll reply with a vehicle and a price.
